Two strategies for the preparation and use of fluorinated heterocycles are discussed: * thebuilding block approachbeing used mainly for the preparation oftargetheterocycles with fluorinated substituents, and * thedirect fluorination approachin which fluorinated heterocycles are used astoolsfor the preparation of bioactive compounds. Strategies presented in thebuilding block approachinclude electrophilic reactions of building blocks derived from trifluoroacetic acid (1), as well as the use of building blocks obtained from trichlotrifluoroethane (2) and chlorodifluoro acetic acid (3) through organometallic reactions. The preparation und use of N‐fluoro sultams62and66are shown in thedirect fluorination approach. Both strategies can be successfully used in the synthesis of bioactive compounds of pharmaceutical and agrochemical interest.
