A new, simple method for position determination in multiwire proportional counters is described. The wires of a normal, constant-pitch, plane cathode may be connected electrically into two components in such a manner that the linear density of each component changes approximately linearly across the cathode. The fraction of charge induced on each component by an anode avalanche therefore changes approximately linearly with avalanche position. Operation of this 'graded-density' cathode has been confirmed experimentally and preliminary results of an investigation on non-linearity and resolution are given. Advantages of this new method are discussed.
