The spectral dependence of the piezobirefringence coefficients of NaCl, KCl, LiF, CaF2, SrF2, and BaF2, at room temperature is measured. From these results values for the shear deformation potentials of the energy bands are obtained. The LiF data suggest that the lowest interband edge occurs along [lll], a situation unique among the alkali halides. The data for the alkaline‐earth fluorides indicate a rather complicated structure for the lowest absorption edge.
