Very high doses are necessary to kill Trypanosomes directly (ca. 600,000 r). These doses have the same effect on some non-parasitic protozoa. There is wide variation in the resistance of individual Trypanosomes of the same strain. Roughly 1/50 of the direct lethal dose is needed to suppress normal division and therefore infectivity.
