Why the study?
Stenosis of the vertebral artery can lead to significant cerebrovascular diseases such as stroke and transient ischemic attacks.
Does stenosis in the vertebral artery alter wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index compared to healthy arteries in a computational fluid dynamics model?
Does stenosis in the vertebral artery alter wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index compared to healthy arteries in a computational fluid dynamics model?
Computational fluid dynamics modeling demonstrates that vertebral artery stenosis induces high shear stress regions, potentially contributing to disease progression.
May inform risk stratification in vertebral stenosis; extends CFD models but leaves open clinical validation.
The vertebral artery is a significant vessel supplying blood to the posterior portion of the brain. Stenosis of this artery, can lead to significant cerebrovascular diseases like stroke and transient ischemic attacks. This paper presents a comparative Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) study of blood flow in healthy and stenosed vertebral arteries. 3D models derived from medical imaging have been used to analyze WSS and OSI. The results indicate that stenosis induces high shear stress regions, which may contribute to the progression of the vascular disease. This study enhances the understanding of vertebrobasilar hemodynamics and supports diagnostic and therapeutic planning.
