Relationships between the California Mastitis Test (CMT) scores and leucocyte count, catalase activity, and A-esterase activity of milk samples taken from opposite quarters of the same udder were compared. A total of 1,122 comparisons was made, in which the opposite quarters either differed or were the same in CMT reaction. The difference between paired values showed that as the severity of the CMT reaction increased, the leucocyte count, catalase activity, and A-esterase activity also increased. These differences suggest that all positive CMT scores should be considered as evidence of abnormal milk.
