A case of sickle cell trait associated with hemarthrosis in several joints is presented. It is suggested that coincidental acute inflammation of the synovial membrane enhanced the sickling phenomenon and produced the resultant bleeding disturbance. The articular changes associated with sickle cell anemia and those found in sickle cell traits are compared and contrasted. The need for careful joint fluid analysis in patients with molecular diseases of hemoglobin is emphasized.
