The saturation magnetostriction λ of two single crystals of nickel has been measured over the temperature range 20°K to 500°K by a capacitance bridge method. The (λ, T ) curves allow a reasonable extrapolation to absolute zero to be made, giving λ 111 = -28 x 10 -6 , λ 100 = -57 x 10 -6 , values which are of the same order as those calculated by Fletcher (1955), λ 111 = -44 x 10 -6 , λ 100 = -187 x 10 -6 . An explanation is given for the discrepancy between the results obtained by Corner and Hunt (1955) and the present values.
