The excellent paper on the problems of X-ray wastage (Boulis et al., 1978) restated a claim made in a leading article in the British Medical Journal (1977) that two thirdsof all new casualty attenders have an X-ray examination. The British Medical Journal leader had used figures from one hospital only. It is worth recording that the average number of casualty attenders referred for X-ray is in fact considerably less than 67%.
