A new design procedure for axisymmetric space-charge-limited diodes has been developed which allows direct specification of the beam current radial profile and the anode geometry, with subsequent solution for the cathode shape required to produce the desired beam. This new procedure has been implemented in a simple design code for diodes immersed in a strong guide magnetic field, resulting in a specific design configuration for generation of a pulsed 2.1 MV, 14 kA, low emittance, constant current density electron beam. Subsequent experimental measurements on such a diode show excellent agreement with theory, with a measured normalized beam emittance of less than 450π mrad-cm over 90 nsec of beam pulse.
