A device for obtaining relatively large photocurrents from small ultraviolet light sources is described. The device has several advantages over the conventional techniques that are currently used and is well suited for use in experimental studies that require a cold electron source. In this connection it has been successfully used as the electron source in a high pressure ion source of a mass spectrometer.
