Neutron diffraction analysis reveals sulfate disorder and dual ammonium orientations in deuterated ammonium alum, confirming structural disorder models in alpha alums.
The structure of deuterated ammonium alum, ND4AI(SO4)2.12D20, an ~ alum, has been refined with the use of three-dimensional neutron diffraction data. The presence of sulfate group disorder, as found from the X-ray study of ~ alums, is confirmed. There is no evidence for water molecule disorder. The ammonium ion attains average centric symmetry by randomly choosing either of two orientations.
