To examine how supportive and oppositional dialogic contributions interact to foster collaborative sense-making and scientific knowledge construction during group work.
Applied microgenetic analysis grounded in a sociocultural theoretical perspective.
Analyzed 12 group dialogues involving 31 students across 8th-, 11th-, and 13th-grade science classrooms during inquiry-based tasks.
Supportive and oppositional utterances were closely intertwined, with dynamic shifts between co-construction and argumentation enabling students to incrementally develop, critique, and refine complex ideas.
Reasoned argumentation occurred less frequently than other dialogic contributions, but oppositional statements without explicit justifications still successfully stimulated peer reflection and the revision of inadequate proposals.
Student dialogues generated complex explanatory models that, while not always scientifically accurate, provide productive conceptual resources for downstream classroom instruction.
