Genomic assembly reveals a high-continuity 2.4-gigabase sequence in the grey seal, highlighting new resources for marine mammal evolutionary biology and conservation.
We present a genome assembly from a juvenile female Halichoerus grypus (grey seal; Chordata; Mammalia; Carnivora; Phocidae). The assembly contains two haplotypes with total lengths of 2,400.06 megabases and 2,387.14 megabases. Most of haplotype 1 (99.54%) is scaffolded into 16 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the X sex chromosome. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 16.76 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly on Ensembl identified 18,331 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.
