Sustainable agriculture is seen as an important goal throughout the world. The notion of sustainability in the agricultural sector has been described mainly through three schools of thought: economic, social and ecological. Most general works have indicated the need to integrate the needs of all these schools into a common descriptor. A composite index that recognises the value of some economic and ecological schools of thought is suggested. In this model sustainability is seen as a dynamic process where measure can be applied only relative to earlier states.
