The paper describes the results of a method for preparing nanoplankton hom freshly collected sea water samples, off the Norwegian coast near Bergen, in a form suitable for subsequent electron microscopy. Identification of 48 flagellates has been provided (= 8 Choanoflagellata, 1 Euglenophyceae, 5 Prasinophyceae, 7 Chrysophyceae and 27 Haptophyceae); 26 of these have not been previously recorded from Norway. Comparative observations have been added on variability in scale morphology displayed by the various taxa, some of which are remarkably constant while others are so variable that study of clonal cultures alone could be misleading. Extreme examples of the latter condition include Chrysochromulina microcylindra, C. ericina, and C. chiton which are discussed and illustrated in a preliminary way.
