In this paper, we show that an FDTD analysis provides all of the useful information to study devices using photonic bandgap (PBG) materials into the reciprocal space of wave vectors. This new kind of analysis is very complete since it can consider very complex structures, excitations, or defaults in the dielectric periodicity of the PBG structure studied. This method provides the modes which propagate the electromagnetic energy, and the values of the k wave vectors. These values are compared to the wave vector read on the photonic band structure diagram.
