Recent developments in commercially available packings and columns for high performance liquid chromatography are reviewed. Packings are classified according to separation mode, functionality, quantity of phase, column dimensions, and other chromatographically useful properties. All modes are covered with particular emphasis on the newer chemically bonded phases and microparticulate packings for exclusion chromatography. The packing techniques for 5- and 10- μm particles are briefly covered. Prepacked columns and their advantages are discussed. To assist chromatographers in getting optimum use of their columns, practical aspects are mentioned throughout.
