Artificial semiconductor and metal superlattices are discussed with the main emphasis on their structural, electronic, magnetic, superconducting and vibronic properties. Examples of novel results are presented to illustrate the interesting new phenomena which occur in solids with reduced dimensionality. Some electronic and optoelectronic device concepts such as tunneling transistors and artificially structured materials are presented in order to illustrate the technological impact of this new field.
