Preparation and characterization of vapor‐deposited diamond coatings and free‐standing diamond membranes are reviewed. General trends and implications of a C/H/O‐phase diagram, which provides a common basis for all diamond chemical vapor deposition methods are discussed. The status of selected mechanical, optical and electronical applications is summarized.
