The dipole moments of four fluorochloromethanes are measured in the vapor state. The inductive effects of carbon-halogen bond moments are calculated and, through these, the moments of methyl fluoride and methyl chloride are used to calculate approximate values for CH2Cl2, CHCl3, and CFCl3, which are in satisfactory agreement with the observed values. The moments of these molecules are then used to calculate values for other substituted methanes which are in excellent agreement with the observed values. The value of a bond moment is treated as a function of its environment.
