A detailed analysis of the X-ray scattering intensity of alpha -Ag 2 S has been carried out by an anomalous scattering technique. The two partial structure factors S ij dif (Q) for Ag-Ag and Ag-S pairs were estimated on the assumption that sulphur ions formed a BCC lattice with the silver ions located within the vacant space. A theoretical consideration has been provided to explain the experimental results. The calculated effective pair potentials between sulphur and silver ions showed a minimum, whereas that between silver ions themselves showed characteristics of a screened Coulomb-like interaction.
