The spontaneous magnetic activity generated from 24 palpable breast lumps was measured by means of a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The magnetic fields recorded in the 2–7 Hz frequency range were of high amplitudes in malignant breast enoplasms (754 ± 305 fT /√ Hz ) and of low amplitudes in benign breast disease (274 ± 49 fT /√ Hz ). It is suggested that the differences detected by SQUID may provide the basis for new diagnostic or prognostic procedures.
