Tactile messages from the hindlimb to the cerebral cortex can ascend in the spinal cord outside the dorsal columns in a tract located in the dorso‐medial part of the lateral funicle. After crossing in the upper cervical region this path is located in the ventral funicle. Impulses transmitted via this system reach the cerebral cortex 2–4 msec earlier than those mediated via the dorsal columns.
