A totally new mode of complexation is exhibited by the pentalene dianion (12−): All eight carbon atoms are coordinated to only one metal atom, and the pentalene ligand is folded along the central CC bond. Like the complex-bound 12−, the acepentalene dianion (22−) is not planar, but has a shell-like structure, and is therefore also expected to be able to function as a ligand in transition metal complexes.
