Compression of a cylindrical thin electrode is optically observed in a new coaxial diode (called the “Ring Pinch Diode”) in which an electron beam circularly pinches. In the positive polarity case of an inner cylindrical electrode, the pinched electron beam irradiates and compresses the cylinder. Compression dynamics are divided into an explosive and an ablative mode according to the electron stopping range. In the negative polarity case, the pinched electron beam produces a ring plasma on the outer electrode, and the inner cylinder is also compressed under the stagnation pressure produced by the expanding plasma.
