In 1963 Rubinstein and Taybi' described seven children with mental handicap, broad thumbs and big toes, and very similar faces. They believed this to be a new and recognisable syndrome. The following year Coffin2 confirmed this view, report- ing six further cases, and it was he that proposed the eponymous title.
