The impact theory of collision broadening of spectral lines is developed for the interatomic potential C 12 /r 12 -C 8 /R 8 -C 6 /r 6 in order to discover whether the term C 8 /r 8 has any significant influence. Theoretical values of C 8 /C 6 7 5/, calculated by the method of Davison are used, and C 6 is then determined from experimental values of broadening and shift. The C 6 values so determined show markedly improved agreement with calculated values over those found by interpreting the measurements without including the term in C 8 /r 8 .
