Interferons, discovered by Isaacs and Lindenmann in 1957, ware originally obtained from human celts at an astronomical cost. In 1979 the gene for beta interferon was cloned and large quantities of a highly pure product became available for clinical research, interferons are known to have anti-viral properties but it now appears that they may have other effects on cellular and body functions. The exact mechanism of action of interferons is still far from fully understood but they appear to bring about their anti-tumour actions through several biological activities, which are initiated when interferon binds to specific receptors on the cell surface to induce the synthesis of effector proteins.
