A simple chemical etching technique is presented to fabricate optical fiber tips of 15–20-nm diameter for use as a probe for a photon scanning tunneling microscope. With the use of a single-step process, conventional multimode fiber is etched in an unbuffered HF acid solution. The cone angle of the fabricated tips can be varied from 4° to 14° by adjusting the temperature and the concentration of the acid.
