A detailed study of a rare‐earth oxide ternary system activated by Eu +3 has shown that these phosphors are host‐sensitized. There are matrix excitation bands present as well as a band attributed to perturbation of excited states of Eu +3 . An exciton mechanism is believed responsible for the matrix band and the field perturbation of the excited Eu +3 state.
