A generalized form of the equations of linear viscoelasticity is presented which describes the behaviour of a material whose inherent mechanical properties are changing with time as a result of ageing or of changing external environmental constraints. The equations are used to successfully predict recovery from stress relaxation measurements for a Lincoln wool fibre subjected to large step changes in relative humidity during the experiment.
