A theoretical analysis is developed to gain an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the bulking of wool carpet yarns during wet treatments in hank form. The theory takes account of several factors that are operative in the relaxed state of carpet-wool fibres in order to enable the structural modification during relaxation to be predicted. It is shown that the over-all change in structure can be explained by assuming that relaxation, which for wool yarns is demonstrated to be a two-stage process, is equivalent to a single dry-relaxation process.
