Chondrosarcoma rarely arises in soft tissue, but in the case presented the tumor was found to be intimately associated with the fibrous capsule surrounding lucite (polymethylmethacrylate) spheres used as plombage for compression of a tuberculous cavity. Because some plastic substances have been shown to be carcinogenic in animals, it is postulated that the malignant transformation (chondrosarcoma) of the heavy fibrous capsule ensheathing the plombage was due to the carcinogenic action of the lucite spheres.
