Observational survey reveals 42 Scolytinae species in regional avocado orchards, highlighting Euwallacea posticus as a pest of economic concern.
Material of the subfamily Scolytinae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) collected during 2015 and 2016 housed in the Entomological Collection of the Centro Nacional de Referencia Fitosanitaria (CECR), Mexico, was examined. Te specimens were collected in avocado orchards and on avocado fruit originating from the state of Michoacán, Mexico. A total of 42 species representing 24 genera were identifed. Te municipalities with the highest incidence of Scolytinae were Lázaro Cárdenas and Coalcomán de Vázquez Pallares. Araptus schwarzi (Blackman) and species of the genus Hypothenemus Westwood were widely distributed throughout the state. Euwallacea posticus (Eichhof) was the only economically important species detected in municipalities with avocado production. Nine species are recorded for the frst time in Michoacán de Ocampo. Additionally, new municipal records are provided for Hypothenemus eruditus Westwood and Euwallacea posticus Eichhof.
