Field experiment demonstrates atmospheric transport models predict xenon radiotracer dispersion within factors of two to ten in complex terrain, highlighting paths to improve modeling fidelity.
127 Xe radiotracer was used at the Nevada National Security Site in releases designed to improve modeling fidelity in complex terrain. Releases were observed by twenty-two real-time xenon sensors deployed in a region measuring approximately ten square kilometers. The measurements were compared with atmospheric transport models in twenty-second steps to observe fine timing details. Some measurements agree with the models within factors of two to ten for appropriately chosen atmospheric model initial conditions. Information contained within the variation in xenon amount over time along with the full gamma-ray spectrum provide additional insight into how to potentially improve fidelity of the models.
