Results of radiometric measurements over bare soil obtained with horizontally polarized microwave radiometers at 1·55 and 19·1 GHz are presented. The observed normalized brightness temperatures were used to estimate the soil moisture content using the radiative transfer model. It is found that the r.m.s. difference between observed and estimated soil moisture content is comparable to the standard deviation found in ground measurement of soil moisture content.
