The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound has been determined. The crystal data are: a = 10.808 (3), b=10.133(3), c = 5.404 (2) Å, α = 76.66(1), β = 89.89(1), y = 80.79 (1)°, z = 1, space group Pī. Some structural details are discussed with regard to the crystalline-smectic B transition at 46°C. Lattice constants for 1-(4′-cyanophenyl)-2- (4″-pentylcyclohexyl)ethane are reported.
