The effect of dissolved hydrogen on the bonding strength of the 3d transition metals is examined using an effective-medium theory. The force required to rigidly separate two halves of a metal crystal with and without hydrogen present in the crack plane is calculated and used as the measure of bond strength. The theory predicts that hydrogen almost always weakens metallic bonds.
