Although attractive as a method for creating preferred fuel from cellulose wastes, the anaerobic digestion process is very slow. A new hypothesis is that phase transfer of products is rate-limiting and product gases inhibit the methanogenic bacteria. In a phase transfer-assisted digester, bacterial reproduction is very rapid.
