The reaction of isobutane with oxygen atoms produced by a titration technique has been studied in the gas phase at 30°C. The experimental evidence leads to the conclusion that hydrogen abstraction by the oxygen atoms plays only a minor role and that the reaction products are formed in a more direct manner by the simultaneous replacement by an oxygen atom, of two groups on the parent hydrocarbon.
