Ba(Zn 1/3 Ta 2/3 )O 3 dielectric ceramics are known to be useful materials for microwave dielectric resonators. The lattice vibrations of Ba(ZnTa)O 3 , a crystal which has a pseudocubic unit cell with a hexagonal superstructure because Zn and Ta ions are in an ordered configuration, are investigated in this paper. Also, the symmetry properties of Ba(ZnTa)O 3 and its ion displacements are examined. The far-infrared reflection spectra and Raman spectra of the ceramics are also presented and discussed in relation to the dielectric losses.
