An interferon produced by FMDV in calf kidney cells reduces viral cytopathic effect and viral replication without directly neutralizing the virus.
Interferon curbs FMDV replication in calf cells without virucidal effects; leaves open in vivo antiviral applications.
An interferon from FMDV-infected newborn calf kidney cultures is described. The interferon appears to be distinct from virus and virus-associated antigens. It is not virucidal, nor does it significantly affect attachment of virus to cells, but it reduces the cytopathic effect as well as the quantity of virus produced.
