The distribution of the genetic correlation coefficient estimated from parent-offspring data has been investigated by sampling techniques, pseudo-observations being generated on a computer. The approximate normality of these distributions is concluded for a range of parameter values in samples of 1000 parent-offspring pairs, providing the heritabilities are high (of the order of 0.4) and the genetic correlation is not close to the limits of its permissible range. Examples when these conditions do not hold are also considered. In addition, for the same parameter combinations, the empirical distribution of the estimated standard error of the genetic correlation is investigated.
