SUMMARY The interaction between aqueous solutions of radioactive iodine ( 131 I) and washed suspensions of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus has been investigated. The conditions of the experiments were such that the bacteria were killed and no free iodine remained. Most of the iodine reacted with the bacteria by an oxidation‐reduction process, but halogenation also took place.
