Thirty-two basal cell carcinomas have been examined by electron microscopy. The majority exhibit cellular polymorphism and the most frequently encountered non-epithelial unit is the Langerhans cell. The nature of basal cell carcinoma and the function of the Langerhans cell are discussed in relation to this observation.
