Leptin is an anorexigenic peptide hormone included to adipokines produced by the adipose tissue. It is a biologically active substance involved in many metabolic processes. Leptin regulates appetite and the amount of adipose tissue in the body. The decrease of leptin production generates unresolved appetite, resulting in severe obesity presented at an early age. Leptin has pleiotropic effects -it affects puberty and is involved in the regulation of blood pressure, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis or inflammatory and immune responses. In this paper we discuss the adipose tissue as anendocrine organ and present the role of leptin in the development of fetus and childin the first months of life.
