Glycomics and chips: Glyco-array devices for rapidly and quantitatively assessing interactions between large numbers of carbohydrate ligands and specific antibodies or lectins have been produced by either spotting carbohydrate-containing macromolecules onto glass slides coated with nitrocellulose polymer (see schematic picture) or covalently attaching mono and disaccharides to appropriately engineered glass or gold surfaces. The utility of these methods in the diagnosis of infectious diseases and in glycomics research is illustrated in this article.
