Magnetohydrodynamic aspects of the Earth’s bow shock 1. Equilibrium bow shock position

The fluid dynamic treatment of the magnetosphere-bow shock system provides a useful means to calculate the equilibrium standoff distance of the shock. From the simple gas dynamic model a specific heat ratio γ≈5/3 of the streaming plasma is found to be appropriate for average solar wind conditions. This result has been derived from different satellite observations.
