Afterglow plasmas in a linear quadrupole showed the same anomalous loss rate from a region where density fluctuations were undetectable (peak-to-peak fluctuation/average density < 1%) as from turbulent regions. The possibility that convective cells may be responsible for the anomalous loss from the quiescent region is discussed.
